授業の概要
This class focuses on fostering reading and writing skills. The main goal of the course is to be able to produce different types of written texts for different purposes, including but not limited to creative writing pieces and academic essays. To achieve this goal, students will be guided in reading and writing different forms of literature; identifying key features and stylistic devices used in each form. Active participation through paired-work, group work, peer-review and feedbacks, and revising written work are expected to develop higher writing skills.

To develop higher writing skills in English for producing various styles of literature, such as articles, academic essays, and short stories.

Planning, writing and revising different forms of writing. Understanding writing for different purposes and their features. Producing original works such as academic essays, persuasive writing pieces as well as creative writing narratives.

Week 1: Introduction to course/ Getting to know each other/ Goal setting
Week 2: Free Writing (p.3): brainstorming and mapping ideas
Week 3: Editing written work: how to edit your own writing an others’
Week 4: Paragraph writing (p.4): formatting a paper
Week 5: Email writing (p.61): writing to your teachers
Week 6: Email writing cont.: writing to a friend/penpal / writing about events
Week 7: Article writing: combining techniques learned thus far to write articles [Article midterm assignment]
Week 8: Writing for specific purposes: writing about advantages and disadvantages/ pros and cons
Week 9: Academic writing: Signal words (p.99)
Week 10: Academic writing: cause and effect (p.101)
Week 11: Academic writing: how to research / planning an essay
Week 12: Academic writing: researching cont. / using search engines in English
Week 13: Final Project: writing an academic essay
Week 14: Peer review of final essay and feedback
