授業の概要
This course is designed for students who would like continued opportunities to explore scientific, technological, and social themes, topics, and issues further, including the taking of personal views and stands in these areas. Students will have the freedom and range to develop their own positions of their interests and levels with confidence.
科目目的
The goal of this course is to continue to focus on topics within science and technology, plus the areas of society that are affected most by science and technology. This is to further help you get a well-informed and well-rounded sense of the role that science and technology plays in society. This, in turn, can help you further to become more informed and able members in your future professional careers, especially in professional discussion, problem-solving, and presentation.
到達目標
As with the English Communication Skills 1 course, this course is focused on activities, discussion, presentation, and some writing with scientific and technological topics and other social issues in English for applied science and technology students. The goal is for students to discuss and present on such topics and issues and be able to communicate their ideas and opinions in a clear manner.
授業計画と内容
The content of the classes may alter considerably depending on whether we are working online or in face-to-face classes and then the necessary rules and guidelines for permissible activities in face-to-face environments.
Week 1: Welcome back - Conversation activities around the students' summer experiences.
Week 2: Q and A - Students construct questionnaires for other students to respond to.
Week 3: Conspiracy theories 1 - A video related set of activities looking at the theme of conspiracy theories.
Week 4: Conspiracy theories 2 - Students research, describe and discuss conspiracy theories.
Week 5: Scary stories - Communication activities based around Halloween themes
Week 6: You are the teacher 1 - Preparing English activities based around a video of the students' choice.
Week 7: You are the teacher 2 - Watching and responding to the activities prepared by other students.
Week 8: Make a game - Students design English games in groups.
Week 9: Play the game - Students play and evaluate games created by other students.
Week 9: Controversial issues - Communication activities related to the theme of controversial issues.
Week 10: Presentations 1 - Choosing a topic, researching and outlining.
Week 11: Presentations 2 - Finalising presentations and related materials.
Week 12: Christmas class - Communication activities based around Christmas themes.
Week 13: Presentations 3 - Performing presentations with discussion questions.
Week 14: Course review and feedback.

Students will be expected to develop their work to the best of their level, outside of class if necessary, and show the quality of their work through class activities.

As with the English Communication Skills 1 course, there is also no textbook for this course. The teacher will provide materials, and students are welcome to search out their own materials on the topics and carry out independent research within them.
