授業の概要
This is a course in Experimental Phonology, a specialized area of Experimental Linguistics. Hypotheses and research questions that arise from the application of theoretical phonology to questions about speech and language processing can be addressed with data gathered in the lab. The course begins with an introduction to some of the fundamentals of theoretical phonology that underlie research into phonological processing. We will focus on the influence that our native language phonology has on speech perception, including perception of our native language, of unfamiliar foreign languages, and of a familiar second language. Considerable time will be spent with "hands-on" experience creating experiments, gathering data, analyzing results, and presenting both a written and an oral report of the findings.
科目目的
This course provides students with training in how to carry out experimental approaches to research in phonological processing and phonological knowledge. By learning the methods for implementing experimental research, students will gain experience that will enable them to understand and critically evaluate published research in this area. In addition, they will gain the necessary skills to prepare, produce, and perform a complete experiment including the collection, processing, and analysis of data. These skills will be directly transferable to their own research in the event that they decide to conduct an experiment as part of their thesis research.
到達目標
Students will learn about theoretical models of Cross-Language Influence (CLI) including the Perceptual Assimilation Model and the Speech Learning Model. Then, they will study the models of bilingual language processing that include the Revised Hierarchical Model and the Bilingual Interactive Activation models. Next, students learn how to create the experiments using software tools for programming experiments (no prior experience with programming is necessary) and for analyzing experimental results. Finally, students will learn how to present their research findings both orally and in written.
授業計画と内容
Some deviation from this list may be required depending on the background of students in the course, but a general guideline for this course will be:
1. Experimental phonology
2. Theoretical phonology and framing experimental questions
3. Investigating phonological features
4. Prosodic phonology: syllables, stress, and intonation
5. Speech perception and the influence of phonological processing
6. Experimental methodologies: AX, ABX, AXB, oddball, and more
7. Response times as measures of phonological processing
8. Digitizing speech and creating experimental stimuli
9. Software for presenting stimuli and recording responses
10. Data collection and data processing
11. Statistics in linguistics — Determining when differences are meaningful
12. Writing up a research report
13. Presenting findings: Oral presentation, poster presentation, written presentation
14. Experimental linguistics — Beyond phonology
