授業の概要
This is an advanced course in Experimental Linguistics. The emphasis will be on gaining experience with a range of experimental methodologies, including lexical decision tasks, word and/or picture naming tasks, self-paced reading, eye tracking (visual world paradigm and reading), acoustic analysis of speech, and articulatory measurements using ultrasound. Students will complete an experiment of their own as a term project.
科目目的
Students will gain first-hand experience with the technical steps involved in creating and implementing various experimental methodologies which will improve their critical reading of the experimental linguistics literature. They will gain some insight into the judgments needed when selecting the appropriate methodology for addressing particular theoretical questions. They will also learn to reflect on shortcomings and weaknesses in their own research after bringing a project to completion.
到達目標
Students learn how to create several different experiment types using OpenSesame, a free open-source software application for presenting stimuli to participants, collecting responses, and measuring response times. In addition, they will learn a number of tasks that can be used with eye-tracking experiments in order to get a glimpse of the real time processing that occurs during language comprehension. Finally, students will learn how to use the acoustic editing application Audacity and the phonetic analysis software Praat. Finally, student will learn the standard format used in reporting experimental results in a published paper.
