授業の概要

We will review the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) while learning about and practicing academic presentations in English. Topics will include: (i) describing someone you admire; (ii) great vacation ideas; (iii) explaining the results of a survey; (iv) explaining a process; (v) explaining topical issues in society; and (vi) giving a persuasive presentation on a topic in the news. You will learn how to structure presentations, use visual aids effectively, speak clearly using sentence stress and pausing, and communicate ideas using gestures. Presentations will be in small groups and you will be asked to give constructive feedback to your peers and reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of your own and other students' efforts.

To improve the 4 skills (listening, speaking, reading & writing) in English, through preparing and making academic presentations.

The repeat course aims to consolidate knowledge of the four skills in English and to improve students’ confidence and overall presentation skills in English, focusing on research in Policy Sciences and Cultural Studies.

Week 1 Course introduction and group familiarisation activities
Week 2 Poster presentations: video and comprehension activities
Week 3 Poster presentations: preparation and rehearsal
Week 4 Poster presentations and feedback
Week 5 Unit 1 – A person you admire: Talking about admirable people & describing a person’s life history & achievements.
Week 6 Unit 1 – A person you admire: Brainstorming & organizing ideas into an outline. Learning about parts in a good introduction & conclusion.
Week 7 Unit 1 – A person you admire: Making effective note cards & using eye contact. Prepare & give presentation about a person you admire.
Week 8 Unit 2 – A great vacation idea: Interview classmates about vacation preferences. Brainstorm & organize ideas into an outline.
Week 9 Unit 2 – A great vacation idea: Opening presentations with lead-in questions & ending with a quote. Making effective PowerPoint slides.
Week 10 Unit 2 – A great vacation idea: Using effective body language. Prepare & give presentation on an ideal vacation.
Week 11 Unit 3 – Young people today: Discussing survey topics & learning about survey methods & results.
Week 12 Unit 3 – Young people today: Brainstorming & organizing ideas into an outline. Opening presentations with questions.
Week 13 Unit 3 – Young people today: Creating effective visual aids.
Week 14 Final group presentations (1st semester)
