授業計画と内容
There are two main elements of this course:
1. Personal English Learning Development (PELD) and;
2. Research and Presentation Projects.
1. Personal English Learning Development
Through the semester, students will do Personal English Learning Development (PELD) to improve their listening comprehension and communication skills. For this, students will do out-of-class research by listening and/or watching and reading about everyday life and society, news, and events in Britain, for example: youth issues, economic issues, education, immigration, sports, politics, the arts, as well as local issues to do with different communities and groups in Sheffield and Yorkshire. In class each week, students will report back on what they have done for their PELD.
A 3-step cycle will be used for the PELD: action, extension and sharing. 'PELD action' means using online materials to do research, taking notes, and asking and/or answering questions based on the materials used. 'PELD extension' means selecting and using additional materials about the current topic in order to obtain more information. 'PELD sharing' means explaining and discussing what has been learned with other members of the class. Here are the weekly PELD themes:
1. Geography and history of Sheffield and Yorkshire
2. The development of modern Sheffield
3. The course of studies at Sheffield that students from Chuo University will be enrolled in
4. The English language dialects used in Sheffield and Yorkshire
5. Arts and entertainment from/in Sheffield and Yorkshire
6. Sport in Sheffield and Yorkshire
7. Food and drink from/in Sheffield and Yorkshire
8. Sightseeing and tourism in Sheffield and Yorkshire; getting to/from/around Sheffield
9. Problems and current issues in Sheffield and Yorkshire
2. Short Research and Presentation Projects
Students will do one or two group research and presentation projects about a topic in Sheffield, Yorkshire or British society that interest them. The projects are intended to be related to the PELD themes (above) but narrower and more in-depth. The project presentations will take place in the final weeks of the semester. Each presentation will be followed by a question and answer session with the audience members and group discussions.
Here are some examples of projects from previous years:
• Sheffield in the industrial revolution
• How the people of Yorkshire are different from people in other parts of Britain and how they have been characterised
• Sheffield and steel
• Sheffield’s current political orientation and economic importance
• The importance of the two universities in Sheffield in terms of their effect on the city

Doing these Short Research Projects will enable students to develop a deeper and more critical understanding of particular social, political, legal, environmental, economic, scientific and cultural issues in Sheffield, Yorkshire and/or British society that interest them. Students will develop each Short Research Project over a number of weeks. In class, students will explain and discuss their research in small groups.
