授業の概要
Global Issues 1 The theme is on the hidden injustices all around us. Some of the topics you'll be considering this semester: racism, corporate control, freedom of speech, righting past wrongs, globalization and child labor, people power, and changes in capitalism. Several of the listening segments are about North America. In particular, we'll be thinking a little about how the small things people do to help can make a big difference. Most of class time will be spent reviewing your homework assignments, which are based on seven video reports from CBC News (Canadian Broadcasting Corp), NBC News (National Broadcasting Corp), and from recent documentaries. In addition, you will be watching several public service announcements, and music videos.
I hope the issues we consider in this class will enrich our understanding of life in many parts of the world. These issues can also be relevant for our everyday lives, many of which I believe are based of issues students are already studying and so reinforce important themes that all of us may be exposed to throughout our lives.

授業時間外の学修の内容(その他の内容等)
Every other class we will have a discussion (every two weeks). This is for you to develop your opinion and perhaps to debate or at least to compare opinions with other students in your group. Every other week you will also have internet- assignments, for the necessary background information to help you develop an opinion and listening assignments. In listening to a variety of accents, some from people whose native language is not English, you will first learn to get the general meaning of spoken English, though you may not understand every word.
Most of your work for the class will be done outside of class, to prepare for the class, especially for the discussions. Please make a copy of the video segments (I will provide the websites) every other week as many times as necessary as you follow the instructions in your homework pages for the Vocabulary, Getting Main Ideas, Listening For Details, Fill In Blanks, Final Details, Internet Research, and Things To Talk About.
Plan to spend an hour each week studying and preparing for the class.
