授業の概要
Environmental Issues 2 (second semester) will focus on indigenous peoples and how they have become leaders against corporate environmental destruction; it will be more on the International Environmental Movement (versus the US in the first semester) and more on what the world is doing today to address issues of Climate Change and Pollution. We will focus a little more deeply on topics introduced the first semester: the Rio Declaration (1992), the Kyoto Protocol (1997), the Oslo Declaration (2006); the Earth Summit (2012). The topics we will consider: 1) The Rise of Severe Weather Patterns; 2) Humanity’s Special Place & Responsibility; 3) Humanity’s Disconnection with Nature; 4) The Philosophy of Limitless Growth; 5) Climate Change/Earth Destruction/Species Extinction/Political Paralysis; 6) How to Live Sustainably; 7) Intelligent Design/Reducing Human Footprint; 8) The Way Forward. I hope students will gain a deep sense of what the Environmental Movement is doing and how ordinary people are contributing to it.
科目目的
In the second semester, the goals are: 1) to offer an overview of the Environmental Movement; 2) to have students engage deeply in such topics as Endangered Species, Environmental Law, and Green Economic Growth. I will use documentaries and films to ensure that all students, regardless of English ability, can understand.
到達目標
We hope students will achieve all the goals listed above and they engage with important global issues and learn more about the international economic system we are all apart of, both the good of it and the destructive.

授業時間外の学修の内容(その他の内容等)
Every other class we will have a discussion (every two weeks). This is for you to develop your opinion and perhaps to debate or at least to compare opinions with other students in your group. Every other week you will also have internet- assignments, for the necessary background information to help you develop an opinion and listening assignments. In listening to a variety of accents, some from people whose native language is not English, you will first learn to get the general meaning of spoken English, though you may not understand every word.
Most of your work for the class will be done outside of class, to prepare for the class, especially for the discussions. Please make a copy of the video segments (I will provide the websites) every other week as many times as necessary as you follow the instructions in your homework pages for the Vocabulary, Getting Main Ideas, Listening For Details, Fill In Blanks, Final Details, Internet Research, and Things To Talk About.
Plan to spend a half hour on the homework each week doing the homework.
授業時間外の学修に必要な時間数/週
