科目目的
This course focuses on input: how students understand written information in English.
This involves understanding the meaning of words, phrases, and sentences. Furthermore, it involves understanding how those words, phrases, and sentences fit together to form the overall meaning of paragraphs and longer texts.
As with the companion course Performance Focus for SDGs, readings in the course will be on themes relevant to SDGs.
到達目標
By the end of the course, students will have improved their ability to read texts in a logical, analytical, and comprehensive way. They will have read a variety of types and genres of texts relevant to SDGs, and will understand the meaning of SDGs and their importance in the modern world.

授業時間外の学修の内容(その他の内容等)
Most of class time will be reviewing your homework assignments, which are based in part on the films The 11th Hour (2007), The Gods Must Be Crazy (1980), An Inconvenient Truth (2006), Ocean Planet (2014), No Impact Man (2009), Island President (2011), and the PBS documentary, Earth Days (2009). The discussion and internet assignments are based on many of the themes from these films. In addition, we will have music in class, from benefit concerts.
Most of your work will be done outside of class. For each class you will have an assignment. Since English is the medium, you can listen to Earth Days on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oqyoz0lVooA. You can find the place by looking at the TIME on the transcripts. Please watch the segment as many times as necessary and follow the instructions in your homework pages for the Vocabulary and Getting the Main Ideas exercises.
