授業の概要
Theme: The Politics of Public Spaces: Historical Monuments and Contemporary Public Art
Coming to terms with a country's history is not always easy. Whether due to civil war, political repression, or changing values, historical monuments and other public traces of the past often remind us that what we cherished in other times does not always match what we value today. And while historical monuments can become controversial sites where citizens negotiate conflicting interpretations of history, contemporary public art can offer new challenging ways to think about political and cultural issues that affect the lives of citizens.
What you will do in class each week
The semester will be divided into two cycles of reading and individual research. For each cycle, as a class we will spend 2~3 weeks reading an article about controversies relating to monuments or public art; and later you will spend 3~4 weeks working individually to research a monument or an artwork of your choice. In class, you will share your notes with other students, working in pairs or small groups. At the end of each cycle, you will prepare a presentation in which you will share your research with 3 or 4 other students.

公共空間の政治性:歴史的モニュメントと現代パブリック・アート
国の歴史と折り合いをつけるのは、必ずしも容易なことではない。内戦や政治的抑圧、価値観の変化などの影響により、歴史的なモニュメントや過去の痕跡は、過去の時代に大切にされていたものが、現在の価値観と必ずしも一致しないことを私たちに思い起こさせることがしばしばある。また、歴史的なモニュメントが歴史に関する論争の場となる一方で、現代パブリックアートは、政治的・文化的問題について新しい考え方を生み出す場になることもある。
毎週の活動
春学期では、リーディングと個人研究を含む2つのサイクルを行う。サイクルでは、クラスで2~3週間かけて公共モニュメントや芸術作品についての資料を読み、その後3~4週間かけて各自が選んだ公共モニュメントや芸術作品についてリサーチを行う。授業中は2人または小グループで、お互いのリサーチ内容を共有する。各課程の最後には、3~4人の学生と研究成果を発表するプレゼンテーションの準備をする。
科目目的
論理的な思考力を求められるような主に現代の英語の文章を読み解き、多面的に理解し、自らの考えを構築することができる能力を身につけること。

授業計画と内容
The Politics of Public Spaces: Historical Monuments and Contemporary Public Art
Week 1. Course introduction: Discuss course theme, goals and methods. Start reading first article on historical public monuments and recent social justice movements.
Week 2. Continue reading first article, working in small groups.
Week 3. Finish first article. Students start individual research on a controversial historical monument of their choice.
Week 4. Research focus on the original historical event(s) commemorated by the monument.
Week 5. Research focus on the construction of the monument itself
Week 6. Research focus on how the monument and site is viewed today
Week 7. Students make a 10~15 minute presentation based on their research to a small group of other students (3-4 other students).
Week 8. Start reading an article on contemporary public art.
Week 9. Continue reading article.
Week 10. Complete reading public art article.
Students individually choose a work of public art connected to civic engagement.
Week 11. Research the civic issues which the work of art engages.
Week 12. Research the work of art itself as well as background research on the artist(s) behind the work.
Week 13. Research the public space (location) of the work. Who does the work speak to? How do you think the work creates or disrupts a sense of community for residents in the neighborhood?
Week 14. Students make a 10~15 minute presentation based on their research to a small group of other students (3-4 other students).

本授業を履修した学生は、授業外で毎週 1-2 時間程度の予習復習などの学習を行うこと が求められます。

毎週１回の授業が半期（前期または後期）または通年で完結するもの。１週間あたり１時間の学修を基本とします。
成績評価の方法・基準

| 平常点 | 100 | Students will be graded mainly based on continuous assessment, in relation to (i) weekly preparation for class, (ii) weekly participation in class, (iii) products made during the semester such as presentations and written work, portfolios of work, reflections and self-assessments, and (iv) other ways of evaluating the quality and development of students’ use of English week by week. Note: To pass this course, students should have no more than 3 absences. 成績は主に平常点で決まります。平常点の内訳の概要は以下の通りです： (i)毎週の宿題 (ii)毎週のクラスへの出席と参加 (iii)課題の評価（プレゼンテーション、ライティング、ポートフォリオ、復習と自己評価） (iv)その他の評価基準 注意点：単位取得のためには、欠席が3回を超えないこととする。 |
