授業の概要
This course is an introduction to Cultural Studies. In it, you will analyse the ways that gender, sexuality, race, nationality and other identities are represented in the mass media and popular culture. このコースはカルチュラル・スタディーズへの導入となります。授業では、マスメディアと大衆文化においてジェンダー、セクシュアリティ、人種、国籍、そしてアイデンティティがどのように表わされている(表象されている)のかを分析します。
The course will help you to critically analyze the representation of identities in mass media and popular cultural texts such as: newspapers and magazines, social media, cartoons (manga) and animation, children's books, television dramas and other TV programmes, movies and television commercials and newspaper advertising. We will look at how men and women, gay and straight people, Japanese people and foreigners, young and old people, and other identities are shown in these texts. Through the course, we will consider the following issues: the way that some identities are represented as 'natural' or normal; whether representations of certain groups essentialize them (show them as all the same) or recognize diversity within them; how representations of identity tend to distinguish 'us' from 'others', emphasizing the difference and strangeness of other people; and to what extent people consume and interpret media and popular culture actively and critically.
Each class will include explanation of a key topic or issue by the teacher, as well as discussions between students in small groups. In the second half of the course, you will also do some research (with guidance from the teacher) on a cultural studies-related topic of interest to you, and give a presentation and lead a discussion on it with a small group of other students.
科目目的
During the course, students will:
i. use Cultural Studies approaches to analyze the representations of various identities in the media and popular culture;
ii. gain an understanding of a range of different identities relating to class, gender, sexuality, 'race'/ethnicity/nationality, age and others, and how they are represented;
iii. analyze representations critically, particularly in terms of how they construct what is normal/strange, divide people into 'us' and 'others', and marginalize or discriminate against some groups, as well as challenge those constructions;
iv. consider how representations in the media and popular culture have shaped their own experiences, relationships and thinking;
v. have the opportunity to apply Cultural Studies approaches to the understanding of an issue of interest to them through their own research and to share that with other students in a presentation and discussion.
到達目標
In the course, students will develop:
i. a basic understanding of Cultural Studies approaches to the representation of identities in the media and popular culture;
ii. the ability to use Cultural Studies approaches to critically analyze representations in the media and popular culture, especially those that stereotype or essentialize groups of people;
iii. an awareness of how representations in the media and popular culture can contribute to, or challenge, discrimination against and the marginalisation of some groups of people in society;
iv. an awareness of their own relationships with representations of identity in the media and popular culture as they grew up;
v their academic literacy for critically explaining, discussing and presenting about issues of representation in the media and popular culture.
