授業の概要

In this course students will study the concept of "love" as it has evolved in Western culture over the past several millennia. Beginning with the classical Greek philosophers, the student will track the idea of love as both a spiritual emotional force and a physical sexual drive, an idea that evolved in the middle ages into the idea of chivalry or courtly love. The student will study how this romantic idea of love is then transformed in the 20th century through the psychological theories of Freud and, later, the Foucauldian political analysis of love and sexuality.

By the end of the course, students will understand the many different cultural and historical meanings attached to the word "love" in the English speaking world.

This will deepen their understanding of both the modern world and the historical origins of the modern world, and aid them in navigating the complicated world of contemporary politics, ethics, law, and culture.

In class, students will have extensive practice in discussion and debate. In each class, the teacher will introduce new concepts and information, demonstrating how new material connects to the content of earlier classes. Students will then take part in group discussions of the material.

Each student will, during the semester, work towards writing a well-structured research essay of approximately 1000 words. In this essay, students must find English-language texts and discuss how those texts connect to the different concepts of "love" discussed in class. These texts may be of any form: for example essays, journalism, song-lyrics, fiction, or poetry. Movie, television, and theatre scripts are also allowed, however the student should focus on both the written text and any visual or performance aspects.

There is no minimum required attendance, however students who miss classes (with no good excuse) or are persistently late for class will have points deducted from their final grade.
