授業の概要
In this course students will study the concept of "nature" as it has evolved in Western culture over the past several millennia. Beginning with the classical Greek philosophers, the student will track the idea of nature both in the sense of environment ("the natural world") and in the human sense ("human nature"). The student will study how these ideas are central to religion, astronomy, politics, human psychology, and the modern environmental movement.
科目目的
By the end of the course, students will understand the many different cultural and historical meanings attached to the word "nature" in the English speaking world.
This will deepen their understanding of both the modern world and the historical origins of the modern world, and aid them in navigating the complicated world of contemporary politics, ethics, law, and culture.
到達目標
In class, students will have extensive practice in discussion and debate. In each class, the teacher will introduce new concepts and information, demonstrating how that new material connects to the content of earlier classes. Students will then take part in group discussions of the material.
Each student will, during the semester, work towards writing a research essay of approximately 1000 words. In this essay, students must formulate a topic that explores one aspect of the different concepts of "nature" as discussed in class. For example: "politics and nature," or "psychology and human nature," or "nature and religion."
