授業の概要
This semester we will embark on a strategic journey with Machiavelli's The Prince. This classic offers indispensable insights into leadership, power dynamics, and ethical decision-making. As we unravel Machiavelli's timeless wisdom, we equip ourselves with a unique perspective crucial for thriving in today's corporate landscape. Throughout the semester, we will delve into the concise yet potent narrative of ambition and success, transcending centuries to provide a roadmap for navigating the complexities of modern business. In Spring semester we will read the first part of the book, before moving to the second part in Fall.
Throughout the semester, we will explore some of the important historical events and figures related the time period when this book was written. The students will conduct peer-teaching sessions and give short presentations as their final assignment.

The objectives of this course are as follows:
・ acquire the ability to read English fluently while also being able to understand the deeper context
・ make short presentations in front of the class
・ gain a broader understanding of the time period and the historical facts surrounding the source material
・ learn how to conduct research
At the end of the coursework, the students will be able to do a close reading of a text and conduct research on background information related to the material. They will be able to make presentations in front of large groups of people as well as learn basic skills needed for academic research.

論理的な思考力を求められるような主に現代の英語の文章を読み解き、多面的に理解し、自らの考えを構築することができる能力を身につけること。
到達目標
学生の教養に資する、英語学習者向けに編纂された文章や、履修者のレベルに合った文章をとりあげ、授業内で適宜与えられる背景的情報を用いながら英文を正確に読み解く能力を養う。より幅広い語彙力を身につけ、文脈に応じて単語の多義的意味を判断しながら、文法的知識をより複雑な文章読解に応用することができるようになること。

Attendance Policy
Absences:
-Students fail the class after the 4th absence.
-Excused absences are limited to health issues, requiring a doctor’s note (receipts are not accepted).
-Extracurricular activities (clubs, circles, etc.) are not considered valid excuses.
Lateness:
-Students arriving within 5 minutes of the bell are not considered late.
-Arriving 20 minutes or later is marked as absent.
-Two instances of lateness equal one absence.
-Chronic lateness policy: Students who habitually arrive within the 5-minute grace period will be addressed individually. Repeated patterns may result in penalties, such as a participation grade reduction.
Train Delays:
-Train delays are excused up to two times, with a physical confirmation paper provided.

Rubric for Short Presentations (20 points total)
1. Content and Analysis (8 points)
・8–7 points: Demonstrates in-depth understanding and critical analysis of the material, with accurate and insightful information.
・6–5 points: Covers the main ideas with some analysis but may lack depth or include minor inaccuracies.
・4–3 points: Limited understanding or analysis, with significant gaps in information or inaccuracies.
・2–1 points: Minimal effort, with off-topic or poorly developed content.
2. Organisation and Structure (5 points)
・5 points: Presentation is well-structured with a clear introduction, logical flow of ideas, and a strong conclusion.
・4 points: Mostly well-organised but may have minor lapses in structure or transitions.
・3 points: Organisation is uneven, making parts of the presentation hard to follow.
・2–1 points: Lacks clear organisation, with significant structural issues.
3. Delivery and Communication (4 points)
・4 points: Speaker is confident, clear, and maintains consistent eye contact with appropriate pacing and tone.
・3 points: Speaker is mostly clear but may struggle with confidence, pacing, or engagement.
・2 points: Speaker lacks clarity or confidence, making the presentation difficult to follow.
・1 point: Minimal effort in delivery, with little attempt to engage the audience.
4. Engagement and Visual Aids (3 points)
・3 points: Effectively uses visual aids (e.g., slides, handouts) and actively engages the audience through questions or interaction.
・2 points: Uses visual aids but with limited relevance or minimal engagement.
・1 point: Minimal or no attempt to engage the audience or use visual aids effectively.

Missed Assignments Policy
1. Quizzes:
・Quizzes can only be taken during class. Missed quizzes cannot be retaken unless the absence is due to illness, in which case:
・The student must provide a valid doctor’s note.
・An alternative assignment will be given, such as a handwritten summary or analysis of the missed section. Typed submissions will not be accepted to ensure originality.
2. Final Presentations:
・If a student cannot present due to unavoidable circumstances, they must:
・Inform the instructor as soon as possible.
・Submit a video recording of their presentation within a specified timeframe (to be arranged with the instructor).
・The recording must meet the same standards as the in-class presentation.
