授業の概要
Theme: Exploring Social, Cultural and Global Issues through Genres of Exposition
This class will focus on understanding texts (audio-visual, written) in various expositional genres used to convey information, ideas, and arguments, such as explanation, persuasion, comparing & contrasting, and story-telling about three main themes of social, cultural, and global issues each semester.
What you will do in class each week: After discussing the language and content of the texts, students will research one aspect of the theme, and prepare questions and simple visuals to explain and discuss what they learned in small groups.
Spring Outline: The three themes we will focus on in the Spring will tentatively be education, specifically access to education, social media and addiction, and use of technology and AI. There will not be front-of-the-class presentations, but you will be guided in making visuals from your notes in order to lead a group discussion about the topic you have chosen from among those suggested in the introductory portion of each research cycle. Each research cycle will be approximately 4 weeks: introduction, note-taking, preparing for discussions, and discussions.
Fall Outline: The three themes we will focus on in the Spring will tentatively be gender equality, immigration issues, and a final theme which we will decide on as a group: such as jobs and ヤミバイト, Lookism, and Overtourism.
