授業の概要

In this course you will read and listen to news articles in English that interest you. Each week you will make notes about the news articles that you focus on, as well as do vocabulary building on key words and concepts. In pairs and small groups, you will use your notes to summarise and explain the news articles(s), and write a summary and reflection about what you learn. Through reading, listening to, speaking and writing about news articles in English, you will develop your overall English proficiency and your understanding of issues in the news that interest you and other students.

The course has three stages. Each stage is four weeks long. In the first stage of the semester (weeks 1-4) you will focus on news stories about a global issue that interests you (for example, AI, climate change, fast fashion, gender equality, human rights, plastic pollution, sustainable living). In the second stage you will choose a social, political, legal or science and technology issue in the news, research it, and give a short presentation in the final week of Stage 2 (week 8). The focus in the third stage of the course is on human rights issues in the news. In this stage you will choose a human rights issue in the news that interests you and investigate it, sharing your analysis in a short presentation or written report at the end of Stage 3 (week 12).

The final two weeks of the course are for reviewing your development over the semester (week 13), and catching up on missing work if you need to (week 14).

The main objectives of this course are to help you to: develop your overall English proficiency; learn interactively with other students about topics and issues in the news that interest you; build your knowledge on different topics and issues in the news; share that knowledge interactively with other people, and develop your critical understanding of the world.

The teacher will provide feedback on assignments, notes or other submitted materials. In class, you will also do self-evaluations and receive peer feedback from other students as you develop and share your news stories and/or research through the semester.
教員は、課題やノート、その他の提出物に対してフィードバックを行います。授業では、学期を通してニュース記事の作成やリサーチ、発表を行う過程で、自己評価を行うとともに、他の学生からもピア・フィードバック（学生同士の評価）を受けます。

Outside class students will listen to and read news stories, and/or do research on news issues that interest them. During class, in pairs and small groups, they will explain and discuss their news stories and/or research, as well as share their news stories/research through presenting and/or writing in different ways.
授業外では、学生はニュースストーリーを聴いたり読んだりし、または自分の興味を引くニュースの問題について研究を行います。授業中、ペアや小グループで、彼らは自分のニュースストーリーや研究を説明し、議論するだけでなく、様々な方法でニュースストーリーや研究を発表したり書いたりして共有します。

Outside of class, students will engage in weekly listening, reading, and research activities using online resources. In each class, they will collaborate with others and develop their work using manaba and other ICT tools. Students can also use Google Docs and other tools to write collaboratively or for individual reflection and writing.
授業外では、学生は毎週オンライン・リソースを利用して、リスニング、リーディング、リサーチなどの活動に取り組みます。各授業では、学生は他者と協力し、manabaやその他のICTツールを用いて、各自の作業を共有・発展させます。また、学生はGoogleドキュメントなどのツールを用いて、共同で作業したり、個人の振り返りやライティングのために使用することもできます。
