授業の概要

＜学位授与方針と当該授業科目の関連＞
この科目は、問題解決力（外国語とコミュニケーションの能力及びコンピューターを利用した統計・情報処理と分析の能力を用いて、科学技術及び社会の急速な変化に対応しながら、さまざまな問題を解決することができる）の修得に関わる科目です。
＜概要＞
This course will improve your ability to communicate in English. You will write and present several two-minute speeches in this class. You will also work in small groups to discuss and present your ideas. You have studied English for years but probably do not feel confident speaking English in public. The best way to gain confidence is to practice. Discussing, writing and presenting your ideas in class will strengthen your English ability, your creative writing ability, and your public speaking ability. I will use class time to help you improve your pronunciation, grammar, word choice, and public speaking skills.

To help students to get to the point where they are comfortable exchanging opinions with others on relatively difficult topics
To enable them to make clear and logical presentations without relying too much on written notes
To improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

授業計画と内容

Week 1: Orientation and discussion. Short film screening & writing activity.
Week 2: News day 1. Small group, translation and summary of current events with slide presentation.
Week 3: Survey. You will carry out a survey of your classmates. You will ask four good questions on any topic you want to learn about. Use this information to prepare a two-minute speech.
Week 4: 1a) Survey Report - Group A. 2 minute individual presentations. You have conducted research using your classmates, and maybe others. What did you learn from your survey? Use graphs, quotes, etc., in your presentation if possible.
Week 5: 1b) Survey Report - Group B. 2 minute individual presentations
Week 6: Documentary (TBA) screening and discussion.
Week 7: 2) Presentation on documentary. (2 minute presentation). Summarize film. What did you think?
Week 8: Two-person play preparation day (Free topic)
Week 9: 3) Two-person play (4 minute presentations)
Week 10: 4a) The Most Important Person in My Life. (Group A) A teacher, a coach, a friend, a parent? Who is the most important person in your life so far? Tell us the story of your relationship with that person and how they shaped your life. Show us a picture of the person if you have one.
Week 11: 4b) The Most Important Person in My Life. (Group B)
Week 12: News day 2. Small group, translation and summary of current events with slide presentation.
Week 13: 5b. My Ideal Life. (Group A) Any wish you have for your life will come true. So what do you really want? Describe your ideal life using the following categories: 1) career, 2) money and possessions, 3) physical and emotional health, and 4) relationships.
Week 14: 5b. My Ideal Life. (Group B)
