The focus of this course on the language and culture of Britain and the impact that these have had on the rest of the world. To get a full understanding, students are encouraged to take Language and Culture B in the first semester and Language and Culture E in the second semester.

科目目的
Have you ever wondered why you study English in school and university in Japan? Did you know that the English language did not originally come from England? Did you know that the English language nearly died out before it became the world’s most important international language? Is Britain’s favourite food really fish and chips and if not, what is more popular? How did tea become Britain’s favourite drink? Do you know why rugby is played in Japan? What is cricket and why is it more popular around the world than baseball? Do you know how many of the world’s most successful pop and rock stars sing in English? What might happen next?
This course (along with Language and Culture B in the first semester) aims to help students discover the answers to the questions above. Another aim of this course is to provide students with an accurate picture of life in modern Britain and how and why it has developed in the way it has. To understand Britain’s culture and language today, it is necessary to understand Britain’s development and how different themes and events are interlinked.
