<概要>
The focus of this course on the language and culture of Britain and the impact that these have had on the rest of the world. Have you ever wondered why you study English in school and university in Japan? Did you know that the English language did not originally come from England? Did you know that the English language nearly died out before it became the world’s most important international language? Is Britain’s favourite food really fish and chips and if not, what is more popular? How did tea become Britain’s favourite drink? Do you know why rugby is played in Japan? What is cricket and why is it more popular around the world than baseball? Do you know how many of the world’s most successful pop and rock stars sing in English? What might happen next? Although Britain is a very small nation, the country and its language and its people have had a significant effect on the rest of the world. How and why has that happened? To get a full understanding, students are encouraged to take Language and Culture B in the first semester and Language and Culture E in the second semester.
