授業の概要

This research and discussion course offers students an opportunity to do independent research on contemporary legal and social issues in Japan from a variety of perspectives. The Spring Semester begins with a focus on developing critical thinking for research and discussion.

Following the critical thinking units, students will begin independent research. Students will develop their research outside of class and this research is used as the basis for in-class discussions and presentations. With guidance from the instructor, students are encouraged to select and research a wide range of legal and societal themes.

In the past, some of the topics that students have researched regarding Japan include: hate speech, euthanasia, the legality of suicide, child labor and child abuse, Japan's new Security Laws, discrimination against minorities, international child abduction, gender (in)equality, death from overwork, same-sex unions, freedom of expression, maternity harassment, and other forms of harassment.

Classes follow the same basic format in both semesters. However students’ research topics differ from one semester to the next. Students are welcome to enroll for one or both semesters.

科目目的

This course is suggested for Law students and non-law students with an interest in contemporary issues of law and society in Japan. Students who take this course will gain a broader and deeper view of law and society in Japan, and, through consideration of specific societal issues, will come to enjoy a richer understanding of the role of law in Japan. In addition, students will gain a clearer understanding of the practical influence of law and how Japan's legal system influences the daily lives of this nation's residents.

During this course, you will:
- develop a better understanding of law and society issues in Japan;
- develop your ability to research issues of law and society in contemporary Japan;
- learn and develop the skills needed to draft logical and comprehensive outlines;
- gain a better understanding of how the dynamics of law and society shape Japan;
- strengthen your confidence for studying with foreign students in a second language;
- improve your ability to negotiate knowledge acquisition with others in English;
and,
- acquire research and interpersonal skills useful for graduate study or career work.

The course is divided into 5 sections for a total of 14 classes.
Each "Independent Research" cycle will conclude with students giving presentations to small groups of class members:

I. Developing Critical Thinking (2 weeks)
II. Public Policy and Analysis of Legal Issues (1 week)
III. Independent Research and in-class discussion (5 weeks)
IV. Independent Research and in-class discussion (5 weeks)
V. Semester Review and class survey (1 week)

Students will be responsible for choosing research topics and developing their research, step by step, over cycles of 4 weeks. Discussions in class with the teacher and other students will help students deepen their research and understanding.

- is trained and licensed as a lawyer (in the US, Massachusetts and DC);
- was an environmental columnist for the Japan Times for 25 years ("Our Planet Earth");
and,
- has taught Law & Society focused research-based courses for over 25 years.

Teaching Approach:
This course will combine short lectures, class, group and pair discussions, independent research, and student presentations in small groups.

Please be aware that ALL work in this class is done in English, i.e., homework, discussion, writing and class presentations. International students and Japanese students study together in this class. Therefore, good English ability is essential. You must have a TOEIC score of 600 or higher or you will not be able to complete this course.
