授業の概要
Diversity, Equality and Social Justice in Japan 日本における多様性・平等・社会正義
本演習は、ジェンダー、多様なセクシュアリティ、移民・難民、先住民族、障害者、貧困層の人びと、社会の中でマイノリティ化・周辺化されている人々の多様性、平等、社会正義の問題について、マイノリティ化され搾取されてきた個人や集団のストーリーを通して学ぶ意欲を持つ学生を募集対象としています。学生は、自身の生活における多様性、平等、社会正義の問題と、他者におけるそれらの問題の両方について考えること、そして自らの状況と周辺化や差別、搾取に直面している他者の状況とのつながりを見出すことに関心を持っていることが求められます。これらの問題について学ぶだけでなく、学生は中央大学やその他の団体で行われる多様性と平等を推進する活動やイベントに参加し、企画に協力することもできます。また、機会があれば、マイク・ニックスの3・4年専門演習ゼミなど、同じようなテーマの他の演習に参加している学生との交流を通して共に学ぶ機会や、夏休み期間のゼミ合宿もあります。本演習では、英語または日本語、英語と日本語の両方で参加することができます。
In the zemi, we will use an ethics of care approach to learn about/from the stories and voices of individuals to find out how they experience marginalization and discrimination, and what responses are needed to those difficulties. We will then relate those stories and lived experiences to broader social, economic, political, legal and media structures, use concepts to make sense of them, and explore the histories that shape them. A key focus of the zemi is to help students think about how they are affected by questions of diversity, equality and social justice in their own lives, to make connections between themselves and others who face marginalization, discrimination and exploitation, and to see how the struggles of minoritized groups for justice can benefit the whole of society.
Students in the zemi will be able to research groups and issues of interest to them so that they can learn from each other about many different aspects of diversity, equality and social justice in Japan. In recent years, participants have looked at issues such as:
• legal issues for transgender families in Japan;
• improving the working situation of single mothers;
• comparing the ‘asadora’ “Tora ni Tsubasa” compare with the situation for female lawyers more recently;
• disparities in support for deaf-blind people in Japan;
• athletes’ stories about the problems of sex testing in sport;
• lesbian couples in Japan;
• sex crimes : why don't women speak up?;
• the potential of やさしい日本語;
• problems faced by foreign residents in Japanese society during Covid-19;
• the situation of languages in Okinawa/the Ryukyus; and
• language issues for foreigners living in Japan.

The zemi will also support you to take part in activities and events that promote equality and diversity. This could be at Chuo, for example by helping to organize a public event such as a film screening or a talk by a person involved with or affected by marginalization, discrimination and exploitation. Or it could be outside the university, for example by volunteering with a group that provides educational support for children with foreign roots.
To complete the zemi and to share their research with other people, students will be able to choose to make different final products such as a research report, a poster presentation or educational materials based on their research.
During the zemi, there will be chances to work together with students in other zemi at Chuo on diversity, equality, social justice, inclusion and multicultural society, including Mike Nix’s 3rd & 4th year senmon enshu zemi, by visiting organizations and communities together, collaborating on events and activities, and sharing research with each other. It will also be possible to have a zemi gasshuku during the summer break with the students in Mike’s senmon enshu zemi if we want to.
You will be able to participate in English, and develop your use of English, in this zemi if you want to. However, it is not an English class and you may also use Japanese as much as you like in the zemi, and develop your ability to work bilingually by switching between English and Japanese. 意欲があれば、本演習では英語で参加し、英語力を伸ばすことができます。ただし、これは英語の授業ではないため、本演習では日本語も自由に使用できます。よって、必ずしも高度の英語力が必要というわけではありません。学ぶ内容に関心を持ち積極的に参加するうちに 、単純な英語力の向上だけでなく、英日の両方を同時に使い分ける、よりバイリンガルな言語環境に親しむ機会となるでしょう。
科目目的
1.日本でのマイノリティ化されたグループの経験、状況、視点、また多様性、平等、社会正義を促進するための組織、行動、アプローチについての知識と理解を深める。
2. 多様性、平等、社会正義を促進し、マイノリティ化されたグループの声を届けるための中央大学およびNPOなどの市民社会組織における実践活動について学び、参加すること。
3. 一対一や小規模のグループでのディスカッションへの参加、プレゼンテーションやオンライン上での研究の共有などを通して、自らの主体的な研究や他の学生の研究から学ぶこと。
1. To develop knowledge and understanding of the experiences, situation and viewpoints of minoritized groups in Japan, as well as about organizations, actions and approaches for promoting greater diversity, equality and social justice.
2. To learn about and participate in practical activities at Chuo University and with NPOs and other civil society organizations to promote diversity, equality and social justice, and help minoritized groups make their voices heard.
3. To learn from your own self-directed research and the research of other students, by participating in pair and small group discussions, giving presentations, and sharing your research online.

During this course, students will become better able to:
1. Listen to, learn from and respond to the stories and experiences of people facing marginalization, discrimination and exploitation in society.
2. Understand how they themselves are involved in and affected issues of diversity, equality, and social justice in their own lives, and make connections with other people and groups who face marginalization, discrimination and exploitation.
3. Understand individual stories and experiences of minoritized people in terms of wider social, economic, legal, political and media structures and processes, the histories that shape them, and key concepts in the field of diversity, equality and social justice.
4. Contribute to diversity and equality in society through practical activities, and volunteering with groups in civil society.

Out-of-class preparation and review will include research (reading and note-taking) with the support of the course website, writing about your research, and preparing for presentations and discussions. You can also plan and organize an event or do volunteer activities outside of class related to theme of the zemi. All students are encouraged to participate in some out-of-class activities at Chuo or in the local community to support diversity, quality and social justice.
