授業の概要
<学位授与方針と当該授業科目の関連>
この科目は、問題解決力(外国語とコミュニケーションの能力及びコンピューターを利用した統計・情報処理と分析の能力を用いて、科学技術及び社会の急速な変化に対応しながら、さまざまな問題を解決することができる)の修得に関わる科目です。
<概要>
This is a listening and speaking course based on current issues in society. Students will be required to listen to and read authentic material, discuss and debate issues and give mini presentations. Critical thinking tasks are included. Vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar exercises are also part of the course.
科目目的
To help students to get to the point where they are comfortable exchanging opinions with others.
To enable students to prepare presentations individually and in pairs.
To improve reading and writing skills.

To help students to improve basic speaking and listening skills.
To give them opportunities to express their opinions.
To help them enrich their vocabulary.
授業計画と内容
There are 10 units in the book. One unit will take about 2 lessons. Units 1-5 will be studied in Semester 1.
Students are to look at the mini presentation topics at the back of the book and think of which presentation topic they choose as they progress throughout the unit.
Lesson 1: Introduction. Explanation of assessment, and how the book works: what is expected of a 2nd year university student doing pair work , group work, debate, research and presentations. Each student is expected to bring the book to the first lesson.
Lesson 2: Unit 1: EXPLORING WORK: Vocabulary to prepare for unit. Listening. Critical Thinking - Making Inferences.
Lesson 3: Unit 1: Video. Vocabulary. Listening and Note-taking. Speaking. Prepare mini presentation. Finish for homework. Deliver in week 4.
Lesson 4: Deliver presentations. Unit 2: GOOD TIMES GOOD FEELINGS. Vocabulary- Abstract Nouns. Listening skill - understand a speaker's purpose. Speaking and Grammar exercises. Video.
Lesson 5: Unit 2: Vocabulary. Listening. Critical thinking - recognize assumptions. Speaking. Review of units. Prepare mini presentation. Finish for homework.
Lesson 6: Present mini presentation in groups. Unit 3: THE MARKETING MACHINE. Vocabulary. Listening skill - listening for examples. Speaking skill - asking clarification.
Lesson 7: Unit 3: Video. Vocabulary. Listening. Speaking. Prepare presentations and finish for homework.
Lesson 8: Unit 3: Deliver presentations and review first three units. Listening test.
Lesson 9: Unit 4: WILD WEATHER. Vocabulary. Listening. Speaking. Pronunciation - Syllable stress. Video.
Lesson 10: Unit 4: Vocabulary - Synonyms. Listening and note-taking. Speaking tasks. Mini presentations. Finish for homework.
Lesson 11: Deliver presentations. Unit 5. FOOD ON THE MOVE. Vocabulary. Listen for Reasons. Critical thinking - recognize a speaker's point of view.
Lesson 12: Unit 5. Speaking tasks. Pronunciation. Video. Vocabulary, Listening. Speaking skill - tell a story.
Lesson 13: Unit 5: Prepare and conduct surveys based on issues outlined in chapter.
Lesson 14: Unit 5. Individual speaking tests. Reflection of course goals and review.
