The language used in class is English, but explanations etc. will also be given in Japanese, if necessary.
授業で使用する言語は英語ですが、必要に応じて日本語での説明等も行います。

授業の概要

In this reading and discussion course, we will use the textbook “Discuss the Changing World 3” to read English texts on a variety of topics and then discuss them in class to practice both reading and discussion skills.
For each unit of the textbook there will be two classes: a reading class and a discussion class. In the reading classes we will read the reading sections of the textbook together. During the discussion classes, we will discuss the topic of each unit. For selected topics we will also have an additional class to do further research and group work, including in relation to Germany.
Your progress will be monitored regularly with review quizzes on each unit, and you will be asked to submit your opinions on the topics covered in the textbook via the course’s Manaba page. In addition, at the end of each term, your level of achievement will be checked by a test on the vocabulary of the review quizzes and the content of the topics covered during that term.

You must prepare the reading sections of each reading class (check vocabulary, etc.) and prepare your opinions on each unit’s discussion topic for the discussion classes. After each unit you must do a review quiz on the vocabulary and expressions covered in the unit’s reading sections.
At the end of each term, you must revise and prepare for the written test (achievement checking).
Finally, be sure to check the Manaba page of the course and your official university e-mail account frequently to avoid missing important course news!

The Manaba page of the course will be used to augment face-to-face classes (for course news, online assignments, model answers for each unit, forum for discussion/group work/questions/comments etc.)

Also, Respon will be used for real-time in-class surveys related to the topics of the course.

Students are required to bring an internet-enabled device (notebook, tablet, smartphone, etc.) to class, to be able to participate in the Respon surveys, access online language resources and do some online research on the topics covered in class.

Details will be provided during the orientation session in the first class of the course.
