授業の概要

In this course, students will study the fundamentals of pragmatics. With guidance from the instructor, they will be required to summarize and present an assigned section at least once during the semester to develop their communication skills and deepen their understanding of language use in context.

科目目的

Part of a two-course series, along with Grammar for Communication, this course draws on the study of linguistics to help students develop communication skills in English. The course teaches students about aspects of language use that lie beyond the grammar and vocabulary and applies principles of English pragmatics to English communication.

到達目標

By the end of this course, students should be able to:
(a) understand and explain the basic pragmatic theories and expressions with example sentences.
(b) improve communicative effectiveness by understanding deixis, presupposition, implicature, speech acts, and politeness.
(c) learn to apply their own theoretical understanding to practical experience through extensive classroom exercises.
