本演習は、ジェンダー、多様なセクシュアリティ、移民・難民、先住民、障がい者、貧困層など、社会の中でマイノリティ化・疎外化されている人々の多様性、平等、権利、差別、インクルージョン・排除の問題について興味のある学生を募集対象としています。このような問題について学ぶだけでなく、参加者は中央大学での活動やイベントの運営に参加・協力したり、多様性と平等を推進する団体でボランティアをしたりすることができる。同じようなテーマの他のセミナーに参加している学生との交流の機会もあります。本演習では、英語または日本語、英語と日本語の両方で参加することができます。
This seminar is open to students interested in issues of diversity, equality, rights, discrimination and inclusion/exclusion in relation to gender, sexuality, immigrants and refugees, indigenous peoples, people with disabilities, people in poverty and others who are minoritized or marginalized in society. As well as learning about these issues, participants will be able to take part in and help organize activities and events at Chuo University and to volunteer with organizations that promote diversity and equality. There will be opportunities for exchange with students in other seminars on similar topics. Students can participate in this seminar in English and/or Japanese.

授業の概要
In this seminar, we will learn about the experiences and situations of different minoritized groups in Japanese society and about different activities and approaches for promoting greater diversity and equality in Japan. We will focus on learning first about the stories and views of individuals in these groups to find out how they experience the issues that they face and action being taken on those issues. We will then try to understand those stories and lived experiences by relating them to broader social, economic, political, legal and media structures and processes, by finding concepts that help us to make sense of them, and by exploring the histories that shape them. In the second semester, we will focus more on the work of different organizations and approaches for supporting the rights of minoritized groups and creating greater equality.
Participants will be able to research groups and issues of interest to them so that we can learn from each other about many different aspects of diversity and equality in Japan. In recent years, participants in the zemi have looked at issues such as inclusive education for students with disabilities, patriarchy and women’s reproductive rights, the potential of Easy Japanese for communication with foreign residents, the situation of trainees on the Technical Internship Training Programme, refugees and migrants on provisional release, creating safe environments for sexually and gender diverse students at school, gender dress codes at companies and in job hunting, how young LGBTIQ people make use of social media to create safe communities and networks, the various effects of poverty on children’s’ educational opportunities, discrimination against Buraku people, the situation of languages in Okinawa/the Ryukyus, and dialogue and mis/communication with Ainu people.
Fourth year students especially will also have the option of participating in the zemi by organizing a public event - such as a film screening or a talk by a person involved with or affected by issues of diversity and equality - or working as a volunteer with a group promoting diversity and equality, and then presenting about their activities/experiences to the zemi.
All students, however, will have opportunities to take part in activities and events that promote equality and diversity at Chuo, or to help out, for example, with groups that provide educational support for children with foreign roots, an Ainu and Okinawan cultural festival, or an LGBT 成人式.
There will also be chances to work together with students in other seminars on diversity, inclusion and multicultural society at Chuo, for example by visiting organizations and communities together, collaborating on events and activities, and sharing research with each other.
You will be able to develop your use of English in this seminar if you want to. However, it is not an English class and you may also use Japanese in it, and develop your ability to work bilingually and switch between English and Japanese. 本演習は主に英語で行われますが、言語の授業ではないため、必要に応じて日本語も使用できます。そのため、必ずしも高度の英語力が必要というわけではありません。学ぶ内容に関心を持ち積極的に参加するうちに 、単純な英語力の向上だけでなく、英日の両方を同時に使い分ける、よりバイリンガルに言語に馴染む機会となるでしょう。
科目目的
1. 日本におけるマイノリティ化されたグループの経験、状況、視点、また日本における多様性と平等を促進するための組織、行動、アプローチについての知識と理解を深める。
2. 多様性と平等を促進し、マイノリティグループの声を届けるための中央大学およびNPOなどの市民社会組織における実践活動について学び、参加すること。
3. 一対一や小規模のグループでのディスカッションへの参加、プレゼンテーションや自身のウェブページでの研究内容の執筆などを通して、自らの主体的な研究や他の学生の研究から学ぶこと。
1. To develop knowledge and understanding of the experiences, situation and viewpoints of minoritized groups in Japan, as well as about organizations, actions and approaches for promoting greater diversity and equality.
2. To learn about and participate in practical activities at Chuo University and with NPOs and other civil society organizations to promote diversity and equality and help minoritized groups make their voices heard.
3. To learn from their own self-directed research and the research of other students, by participating in pair and small group discussions, giving presentations, and sharing their research on their own webpage.

During this course, students will become better able to:
1. Understand how they themselves, not just other people in society, are involved in issues of diversity and equality, in their own lives.
2. Learn about diversity and equality in society by listening to the stories and experiences of people affected by those issues and understanding their perspectives.
3. Understand individual stories and experiences of minoritized people in terms of wider social, economic, legal, political and media structures and processes, the histories that shape them, and key concepts in the field of diversity and equality.
4. Contribute to diversity and equality in society through practical activities, and volunteering with groups in civil society.

Out-of-class preparation and review will include research (reading and note-taking) with the support of the course website, writing about your research, and preparing for presentations and discussions. Fourth year are able to work on planning and organising an event or volunteer activities outside of class, instead of doing online research work, if they choose to. All students are encouraged to participate in some out-of-class activities at Chuo or in the local community to support diversity and equality.
