授業の概要
Theme: Deciding our Future – Facing Challenges in Japan and Beyond
Japan is a beautiful country with a rich culture and traditions. It is also a country facing many challenges, including an aging population and stagnant economy. People are having fewer children and some have even decided to leave. Japan is not the only country facing challenges though, and there is a lot we can learn from other countries that currently have or have had similar problems. In this class, we will start by reading/watching news about people who have decided to leave Japan and find out why. We will then explore the challenges that Japan faces and connect what we learn with world news and history. The goal will be to make specific and informed decisions about what should be done to solve real problems at home and abroad.
What we will do in class each week
Preparation for class will involve exploring each topic through reading, note-taking, summarizing, further research, and developing our own presentations. In class, we will share and discuss our notes and other work with our classmates in pairs or small groups. We will discuss our thoughts, experiences, and questions related to the issues that we study as well as our decisions regarding what to do about those issues.
Spring course outline
After an introduction (Week 1), this course has three cycles with a short presentation at the end of each cycle. In Cycle 1 (Weeks 2-5), we will focus on reading/watching news stories on why some Japanese citizens have decided to leave Japan. In Cycle 2 (Weeks 6-9), the focus moves to stories on related issues faced by Japan as well as other countries, while in Cycle 3 (Weeks 10-13) we will create our own project, individually or with other students, about a particular issue that Japan shares with other countries and develop it week by week to deepen our understanding. Finally, in Week 14, we will review our development over the semester and complete a self-assessment.
