授業の概要
Theme: Children and the issues that they face in the world.
In this course you will learn about the issues affecting children’s lives around the world.
You will be able to choose to look at different issues that affect children in different parts of the world such as education, poverty, labor, mental and physical health, migration, technology, bullying, exploitation, abuse, early marriage, family relationships, disability, adoption, foster care, kidnapping, conflicts, and rights.
We will focus not only on problems but also success stories. We will try to better understand the situations and issues children face and the actions of those who aim to support and improve their lives. We will do this by looking at children’s individual stories, local, national and international government policies and the work of NGOs. We will look at the situations of children in Japan and internationally.
What you will do in class each week
We will learn from different kinds of texts, particularly the websites of organisations that support children. We will look at the written and video stories of these issues. Each week, you will make notes about the texts outside of class, and work in pairs or small groups in class to share in English what you have learnt from them to develop your understanding with other students of the different situations and issues that children face. You will make a weekly research journal about your learning and make products such as booklets, PowerPoint presentations, skits and webpages to present what you have learnt to other students.
Spring and Fall course outline
Each semester will be divided into two cycles of reading, listening and individual research. For each cycle, as a class we will spend 1-2 weeks reading articles, watching videos and sharing ideas about the selected children’s issues to build a wide knowledge base; after that you will narrow your interests and spend 3-4 weeks working individually to research and extend your knowledge on your chosen theme. In class, you will share your notes with other students, working in pairs or small groups. At the end of each cycle, you will prepare a presentation in which you will share your research with 3 or 4 other students. Please come ready to use and participate actively in English.
