授業の概要
Theme: Impacts of Climate Change around the World
This course focuses on learning about climate change and related issues. Using different kinds of sources (print, web, audio, video, and multimedia), you will research how climate change various issues and regions around the world. You will follow your own interests to focus on how climate change relates to issues like gender, human rights, economics, or others, or how climate change is affecting particular regions of the world, like Japan, South Pacific islands, or Africa, for example.
What you will do in class each week:
In class each week you will share and talk about your notes with other students in pairs or small groups. You will also keep a weekly “Climate Change News Journal” in which you record key vocabulary and write about your thoughts, experiences, and questions to do with the stories and issues that you and other students learn about.
Spring course outline:
After an introduction in Weeks 1 and 2, this course has two cycles with a short presentation at the end of each cycle. In Cycle 1 (Weeks 3-8), you will focus on a particular country or region to research the relevant causes and effects of climate change . In Cycle 2 (Weeks 9-14), the focus moves to how climate change affects other global issues, like economics and poverty, human rights and refugees, gender, education, etc. Finally, in Week 14, you will review your development over the semester and complete a self-assessment.
Autumn course outline:
After an introduction (Week 1), this course has two cycles with a short presentation at the end of each cycle. In Cycle 3 (Weeks 2-7), you will focus on climate change activists and movements in the news so that you can develop your knowledge and understanding about particular individuals and organisations working to address climate change. In Cycle 4 (Weeks 8-13) you will develop your own “Climate Change Campaign” on a climate change issue in the news that you are interested in.
