授業の概要
Theme: Human Rights Issues in Japan and Other Societies
This course focuses on human rights issues and questions of discrimination and inequality in Japan and other societies. You will be able to choose to learn about different issues that individuals and different groups of people face, to do with, for example, the environment, employment, business, justice, healthcare, the arts, history, sports, and science and technology.
What you will do in class each week
In this course we will use different kinds of texts (print, web, audio, video, multimedia) to learn about human rights issues together. Through the semester you will choose human rights issues that interest you, find information, and make notes about different stories, cases, and organisations connected with those issues. In class each week you will share and talk about your notes with other students in pairs or small groups. You will also keep a weekly “Human Rights Diary” in which you write about your thoughts, experiences, and ideas to do with the human rights issues that you and other students learn about.
Spring course outline
After an initial introductory stage (Weeks 1-3), the course has two projects. In Project 1 (Weeks 4-8), you will focus on “Human Rights Stories, Cases, and Campaigns in Japan” and give a short presentation at the end of the project. In Project 2 (Weeks 9-13), the theme is “Human Rights Stories, Cases, and Campaigns in Other Societies,” and you will create, at the end of the project, a profile (e.g., poster, story, short video) of a particular issue and what different individuals and organisations are doing about that issue. Finally, in Week 14, you will review your development over the semester and complete a self-assessment.
Autumn course outline
The autumn course has two projects, and you will give a short presentation at the end of each project. The theme of Project 3 (Weeks 1-7) is “Human Rights Activists and Defenders,” and you will choose a particular human rights defender or activist to learn about. Project 4 (Weeks 7-12) focuses on “Human Rights Issues in Your Life or a Local Community, Organisation or Network” that you are part of. With other students you will investigate a local issue, as well as develop ideas and materials for taking action. Week 13 is a discussion-focused class about human rights issues across different student projects. In Week 14, you will review your development over the semester and complete a self-assessment.
