授業で使用する言語(その他の言語)
In class, you will work in English, but you can also use Japanese when you need to, especially for research.
授業の概要
Theme: Animal rights
During the Spring semester, we will explore different animal rights issues, such as habitat loss, pet trade, wildlife tourism, conservation, and animals in entertainment. We will take a deeper look into the way animals are treated by exploitative industries and by the law, research how animals’ rights can be protected, and consider and discuss several controversial practices and policies. We will work on several topics together and then you will select one more topic within this theme, research it, and tell your classmates about it.
What you will do in class each week:
We will work with different types of texts: articles, charity websites, blogs, official documents, and so on. Each week, you will make notes based on these texts outside of class. You will also be encouraged to dig a bit deeper and find some additional information to add to your main notes. In class, you will work in pairs and groups and explain your notes and then share your ideas and opinions with your classmates in English (and some Japanese if necessary). You will also compile short opinion reports and reflections based on class work.
Course outline:
After an initial introductory week, there will be several weeks of working on several topics together. From week 10, you will choose your own topic within the main theme and research it. During this research cycle you will make notes, mind-map, plan, and organize information, and then present it to a group of classmates at the end of the semester.
For more detailed information, please refer to the weekly plan.
