授業の概要
Theme: International Issues and Concerns in the News
This course will focus on learning about international issues and concerns through the news. Over the year, you will learn about social, political, legal, economical, environmental, educational, cultural issues of interest to you. You will use different kinds of sources, such as print, web, audio, video, etc. to search for your topics and make notes through reading, listening to, or watching different news sources.
What you will do in class each week
Each week you will start off talking about the news around Japan and the world that you hear and become interested in. We will talk casually and freely for icebreaking activity. Then will share and talk about your notes with other students in pairs or small groups. In each activity you will use both English and Japanese effectively. You will also write a journal using English in class each week about the topics that you and other students share. In cycles of 4-6 weeks, you will develop your ability to do research to build your knowledge of issues. You will also improve your ability to explain, give presentations on, and discuss your research in pairs and small groups. Twice in each semester, you will have chances to give presentations to a small group of other students.
Spring course outline
After the introductory week, this course will have two cycles with a poster presentation and a power point presentation at the end of each cycle. In cycle 1 (week 2-5), you will choose one topic among social, political, legal, economical, environmental, educational, cultural issues, read, listen to, or watch the news related to your topic. Then make a poster presentation and reflection in week 6-7. At the end of cycle 2 (week 12-13) you will give a power point presentation to a small group of other students. In week 14, you will review your development and knowledge over the semester and do a self-assessment.
