授業の概要
Areas covered in this course:
In this course you will read and explore diverse materials around the following research areas:
Spring semester
(1) global health issues; and
(2) international laws and agreements and their impacts on Japan
Fall semester
(3) Japan’s relations with East Asia and Southeast Asia in the early twentieth century; and
(4) social movements and political activism
In this course, you will have opportunities to read and discuss a variety of materials related to the four research areas above, including academic and journalistic articles, reports published by government agencies, nongovernmental organizations and other institutions, as well as primary materials such as diaries or letters written by individuals working in or directly affected by the issues you are exploring. Sometimes the teacher will provide you with a list of reading materials for you to choose from; at other times you will be required to find relevant reading materials on your own. The materials you read in this class will help you with your research in the other Elective English class taught by Professor Nozawa.
Each week, you will be expected to take detailed notes on your reading materials. Over the course of each research project, you will be required to develop a comprehensive reading list on a topic of your choice related to the general research area. Your reading list should include brief summaries and analytical commentaries on each of the readings included. During class each week, you will have multiple opportunities to share the knowledge you gained from your readings with other students.
