履修条件・関連科目等

No prior knowledge of Southeast Asia or economic theory is required. However, as this course will be conducted in English, a minimum level of English comprehension equivalent to CEFR B2 is required.


この授業は3・4年次に配当される東南アジア研究IIやIIIの基礎となる科目です。
This course is designed to provide a basis for Southeast Asian Studies II and III, offered in the 3rd and 4th
years.

授業の概要

This course focuses on five middle-income countries in Southeast Asia: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. We will analyze the interactions among political and societal changes, industrial policy, and the trajectory of economic development in these countries.

科目目的

This course aims to deepen students’ understanding of the political economy of middle-income countries in Southeast Asia, as well as their changing relations with Japan, China, South Korea, and the U.S. It also aims to familiarize students with relevant theories and concepts, such as the developmental state, bureaucratic authoritarianism, the dual-sector model, the middle-income trap, and the three waves of democratization.

到達目標

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- explain the political economy of middle-income countries in Southeast Asia, with particular reference to Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam;
- analyze the interactions among political and societal changes, industrial policy, and economic development trajectories in these countries;
- apply key political economy theories and concepts to empirical cases;
- articulate their own views on the evolving relations between Southeast Asian middle-income countries and major external actors, including Japan, China, South Korea, and the United States.

Week 6: The Emergence of Developmental Authoritarianism in Southeast Asia
Week 7: Export-Oriented Industrialization and Political Challenges
Week 8: Widening Income Gaps and Politically Schizophrenic Middle Classes
Week 9: The End of the Demographic Dividend and the Middle-Income Trap

平常点 10 In-Class Performance 10% Students are expected to make a short oral presentation at least twice during the semester.

Short comprehension quizzes after each class 10% Students are asked to answer online short quizzes after each class.

成績評価の方法・基準(備考)

Students who do not respond to the online short quizzes more than three times and/or do not give a short oral presentation more than once will fail this course.

There is no specific textbook for this course. Course materials will be drawn from various sources, including newspaper articles published in Southeast Asia, relevant theoretical articles from academic journals, and statistical reports published by government agencies.
