授業の概要
The course introduces some advanced theory and applications on firm behaviors. The course will cover the wide range of market structures and strategies employed by profit maximizing firms. Students will learn the importance of competition in the global economy, why pro-competitive policies are necessary, and why firms need to comply with pro-competitive policies.
科目目的
The target is to provide students with tools to evaluate the consequence of strategic behaviors by firms on the industry performance and to explain the effect of public policies that restrict the anti-competition behavior of firms.

By the end of the course, students should be able to
1. Describe the factors that determine the market structures in which firms compete with each other.
2. Deduce the results of strategic behaviors of firms.
3. Analyze the conditions for firms to achieve better performance.

4. Firms and costs (Chapter 2. Carlton and Perloff).
5. Competition (Chapter 3. Carlton and Perloff).
6. Monopolies, dominant firms, and basic oligopoly models(Chapter 4, 6. Carlton and Perloff).
7. Product differentiation and monopolistic competition (Chapter 7. Carlton and Perloff).
8. Pricing (Chapter 9, 10. Carlton and Perloff).
9. Strategic behaviors (Chapter 11. Carlton and Perloff).
10. Vertical integration and vertical restrictions (Chapter 12. Carlton and Perloff).
11. Information, advertising and disclosure (Chapter 13, 14. Carlton and Perloff).
12. International trade, market failure and public policy (Chapter 18. Carlton and Perloff)
