授業の概要
This course provides insights into the development of the Japanese economy and the evolution of the so-called Japanese enterprise and management system from the Meiji Restoration to the late 1980s. We will look at how Japan was able to successfully industrialize and catch-up with leading Western economies to become a global economic power. In doing so, we will give not only a historical account of Japanese macro-economic development, but also analyze among others the role of economic policy, the institutions constituting the Japanese system of capitalism and entrepreneurship.
科目目的
The course aims at providing students with basic knowledge about Japanese economic history from the Meiji restoration until the late 1980s. It particularly aims at making students understand how Japan managed to transform itself from feudal economy into modern industrial economy after the Meiji restoration, how it successfully caught up with leading Western economies after the Second World War, and how it was able to overcome two oil crises to establish itself as a technologically leading economy by the late 1980s.
到達目標
In this course, students will acquire basic knowledge about the history of Japan’s economic development. They will learn about the factors underlying Japan’s pre-war industrialization and post-war economic success.
