授業の概要
This course provides insights into the development of the Chinese economy. We will cover ancient, modern and contemporary history focusing on seven major periods: five dynasties, the Republic of China and the People’s Republic of China. For each period, we will study the major features of the economic system and economic policies. We will also discuss China’s international trade under the so-called tribute system, and review the major discourse among scholars of Chinese economic history concerning the link between technology and industrialization. Wherever possible, we will compare the economic development in China with other economies at the time.
科目目的
The course aims at providing students with basic knowledge about Chinese economic history from early records to the present. It particularly aims at enabling students to understand how China’s economy has been shaped by economic policies, the successes and failures of the country’s political regimes and international political order. To better grasp the important features of Chinese economic history, major episodes will be compared with developments in Europe, the US or Japan.
到達目標
Students will acquire basic knowledge about the history of China’s economic development. They will learn about the main factors driving China’s development. By applying a comparative perspective, the study of the Chinese case will enable students to enhance their general knowledge about economic development, the role of economic policy, technology and international political order.
