授業の概要
Understanding The Media
The course aims to give students a deep understanding of how the mainstream media works. To start with an overview of the media using Chomsky and Herman's 5 Filters of the Propaganda Propaganda Matrix from their classic book Manufacturing Consent will be used. Many example case studies will be shown to highlight how these 5 filters work in practice. Also the course will show how these filters need to be updated to cope with the arrival of social media and the widespread availability of video capable smart phones which makes every citizen a potential citizen reporter. Also the relationship between business and the media (both mainstream and social) will also be explored.
科目目的
To have students be aware of the way the mainstream media works and the limitations for accuracy and truth in reporting their standard way of operating brings. This will enable students to critically examine all stories in the media for biases to help make students more informed consumers of media reporting. Also it will shopw students how social media can also be used for business marketing and pr.
到達目標
GLOMAC students will probably end up working in business in some way. As businesses have a close relationship with media through ownership and / or advertising it is important for business people to understand how the media works. This also includes social media and how these are also used in modern business marketing and pr. So this course can prepare students for these aspects of their future employment.
