授業の概要
In this class, we will read the book "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell. It is a popular book and the source of well known social memes like "the 10,000 hour rule" and "The Matthew Effect".
Students will read a chapter a week, and complete Cornell notes for each chapter read for homework. The pace of class will depend on the ability of the students.
Each class will include discussing the topics in groups and as a whole class. Vocabulary and new expressions will come from the source material.
One class will be devoted to student led instruction on a topic of their choice inspired by the text.
科目目的
Students will be practicing reading in class and for homework. Students will read and discuss the text in class. Questions and exercises about the content will be included in each class. Students will learn summarizing techniques for homework as well as self study techniques. Vocabular, grammar, reading skills, pronunciation, intonation, speed, understanding and criticism will be practiced along with reading the text, not separate from.
到達目標
By the end of the course, students will have improved their reading speed, pronunciation, chunking skills and intonation.
Students will have read a book entirely in English, and will understand popular expressions from the text found in popular culture.
Students will gain understanding in the topics in the book as well as criticisms to the ideas expressed.
Students will finish class understanding that discussing, agreeing and disagreeing is a good way to enjoy reading while improving at the same time.

Class 1: Introduction to class procedures and materials. Introduction to Manaba and other online platforms. Read introduction "The Roseto Mystery".
Class 2: Review homework in groups. Read ch.1 "The Matthew Effect" about age and ability.
Class 3: Review homework in groups. Read ch.2 "The 10,000-Hour Rule".
Class 4: Review homework in groups. Read ch.3 "The Trouble with Geniuses, Part 1".
Class 5: Review homework in groups. Read ch.4 "The Trouble with Geniuses, Part 2".
Class 6: Review homework in groups. Chapter 1~4 review and catchup. Read rebuttals to the 10,000-hour rule.
Class 7: Review homework in groups. Read ch.5 "Three Lessons of Joe Flom".
Class 8: Review homework in groups. Read ch.6 "Harlan Kentuckey".
Class 9: Review homework in groups. Read ch.7 "The Ethnic Theory of Plane Crashes".
Class 10: Review homework in groups. Read ch.8 "Rice Paddies and Math Tests".
Class 11: Review homework in groups. Read ch.9 "Marita's Bargain". Introduction of final project.
Class 12: Review homework in groups. Read Epilogue "A Jamaican Story".
Class 13: Review homework in groups. Chapter 5~9 and epilogue review. Practice final project.
Class 14 Review homework in groups. Final projects.
The class schedule will change according to students ability. This is a guideline.
