Communication with the teacher will be in English in order to improve your listening and speaking skills.
授業の概要
This course will provide students with the necessary skills and vocabulary for expressing their opinions, thinking critically, and discussing various topics. Students will build listening skills and active vocabulary, learn different communication strategies, and practise explaining and presenting their points of view and results of their research.
During each semester we will work with several topics, 3 – 4 weeks per topic. Each topic will consist of some reading and key vocabulary tasks, listening, discussion points for pair and group work, and opinion-based tasks. At the end of each semester students will work on their own research projects, which they will present and discuss in groups.

1. To explore communication strategies for sharing and discussing information and opinions on various contemporary and thought-provoking topics.
2. To learn important communication skills.
3. To improve spoken fluency and listening comprehension.
4. To develop critical thinking and research skills.
5. To develop learner autonomy.

By the end of this course students should be able to:
1) Find and work with materials for active learning and research;
2) Take effective notes, explain and discuss them in groups;
3) Express opinion, agree & disagree, compare & contrast, explain cause & effect;
4) Participate in simple discussions;
5) Prepare and present short projects and reports.

Semester 1:
1. Introducing course materials and course requirements; students’ self-introductions. Useful vocabulary for class work.
2. Note-taking for speaking. Word-webs: ways of building vocabulary.
3. Group work based on homework notes. Basic discussion skills: agreeing and disagreeing.
4. Topic 1: key vocabulary and questions.
5. Topic 1: listening and note-taking. Discussing notes in groups.
6. Topic 1: group presentations based on homework research.
7. Topic 2: key vocabulary and discussions.
8. Topic 2: persuasive strategies in speaking and writing.
9. Topic 2: group discussions based on homework.
10. Topic 3: key vocabulary and discussions. Making suggestions and giving advice.
11. Topic 3: reading, note-taking, and peer interviews.
12. Topic 3: presenting a report based on peer interviews. Research project: discussing topics.
13. Research project: basic research skills: making mind-maps and planning a short talk.
14. Presenting projects in small groups. Semester reflections.
Semester 2:
1. Vocabulary for describing events; interviewing classmates.
2. Reports based on interviews: group presentations.
3. Topic 4, week 1: key vocabulary, reading, and note-taking.
4. Topic 4, week 2: group discussions based on homework and class work.
5. Topic 4, week 3: presenting opinions in groups.
6. Topic 5, week 1: key vocabulary, reading, and note-taking.
7. Topic 5, week 2: class survey and opinion paragraphs.
8. Topic 5, week 3: explaining and discussing researched information.
9. Research project, week 1: choosing and discussing topics.
10. Research project, week 2: mind-mapping and outlining.
11. Research project, week 3: persuasive strategies for presenting opinions.
12. Research project: week 4: effective structure and visual support.
