授業の概要
This is a research seminar in which we study the mental process of understanding spoken language. We will learn how listeners recognize meaning in the sounds produced by others, how words and their meanings are stored in memory, and how they are accessed when we listen to fluently produced speech. We will further investigate the influence of how words are written. Students will learn how to design and carry out experiments to answer research questions based on theoretical models of speech processing, language comprehension, and language acquisition.
科目目的
The goal of this seminar is to teach students how to investigate questions about the human ability to comprehend spoken language using experimental methods in psycholinguistics. The seminar will begin by studying the characteristics of speech that make meaningful distinctions in spoken language. We then learn about a model for how words, including their spoken form and their meaning, are stored in memory.
Next, we will study several different experimental tasks used to investigate how listeners recognize words in speech and understand meaning. After reading a number of experimental reports, students will work together in groups to conduct joint research projects on some aspect of spoken language processing. Together we will identify clear research questions (or hypotheses), select appropriate experimental methods to address those questions, and create materials, gather data, and analyze results.
到達目標
Students will learn about theoretical models of words in the mind, including how meanings and sounds are stored in memory. Then, they will learn how to measure various properties of speech using Praat, a software application for doing phonetics by computer. Students then gather data for an experiment by recording speech and analyzing it with the skills they have learned using Praat. Then, the will learn to conduct a statistical analysis of data in order to draw conclusions from experimental results.

授業におけるICTの活用方法(その他の内容等)
Some computer use will be required during certain lectures when students are receiving instruction in how to use software tools for measuring the sounds of speech and for data analysis. Students may wish to bring their own laptop for these classes, although university laptops will also be available for anyone who prefers to use one of them.
