This research seminar will focus on experimental methods in language sciences. Decades of careful experimental research has shown how we store words in memory, how we access them when producing or listening to speech, and how we combine them when using language to communicate with others. We will learn how to use a number experimental techniques by creating some basic experiments, gathering small sets of data, analyzing results, and producing reports. Students will gain first-hand experience in each step involved in carrying out an experimental study.
This course will guide students through the process of carrying out a genuine experimental research project from start to finish. Not only do we want to learn about how language is stored in memory and accessed during speech as well as how our native and non-native languages influence one another, but we also want to understand clearly how we know this. By learning how to carry out the experiments used in the research reports we read, we will gain a deeper understanding of the results of that research. It is hoped that students will then be able to follow the same process themselves as they prepare their own research report for a ゼミ論 or 卒論 the following year.
Students will learn the fundamental principles behind experimental design, which is crucial for producing valid results. These design principles will then be applied to specific experimental methods as we create several small scale experiments. Students learn how to create experiments using OpenSesame, a free cross-platform software application the presents experimental stimuli, records participant responses, and measures response times. Some basic steps in data processing and data analysis will also be covered using GoogleSheets and a statistical application called JASP in order to see how results can turn into potentially interesting findings. Finally, students will use GoogleDocs as they learn how to produce a written research report in English.

There will be readings assigned that will build on the information presented during class. In addition, students should expect to spend a considerable amount of time on their own, or in groups with other students, preparing materials (including stimulus items, experiment scripts, and data analyses) for experiments that we develop and carry out in the course.
