授業の概要
This course introduces students to the phonetics of syllables, stress, words, compounds, and phrases, as well as intonation in sentences and larger discourse in spoken English.
The course begins with how segments are organized into syllables, including their constituent parts. We then move to the grouping of syllables into larger units of prosody such as the "metrical foot", a unit used to analyze poetry that applies equally well to the study of everyday spoken language. It is particularly useful in understanding the rules of English stress in words, compounds, and phrases. The course finishes with students learning about the different intonation patterns used to signal grammatical and pragmatic meaning in spoken discourse.
科目目的
The purpose of studying the phonology of English is to understand the principled organization of speech sounds in patterns that give English its distinctive rhythm and melody. It also provides a deeper understanding of the changes words undergo when they are inflected with grammatical and derivational endings. Moreover, comparing the phonological principles of Japanese and English will make clear many of the pronunciation challenges Japanese learners of English face and some of the strategies available to overcome them.
到達目標
Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the sound patterns of spoken English. This includes how speech sounds are pronounced together in syllables which are themselves organized into larger units of stress and intonation. The phonetics and phonology of English will be studied in depth, and students will learn how to apply what they learn to their own English pronunciation, with a particular emphasis on fluency gained through improved phrasing, stress and intonation.
