授業の概要

This course introduces students to media literacy: the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and compare media messages across formats. Students will learn to apply core media literacy concepts to real-world media texts, including news articles, online media, and visual content.

科目目的

This media literacy course emphasizes critical thinking, comparison across news sources, and clear analytical discussion and writing in English about these sources.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
• Explain why media literacy is important in contemporary society
• Identify and apply the five core concepts of media literacy
• Analyze written and visual media using a structured framework
• Compare how different media sources report on the same topic
• Communicate media analysis clearly in both spoken and written English

授業計画と内容

Week 1 – Course Introduction
• Course overview, expectations, grading
• What is media literacy?
• Why media literacy matters (examples from news, social media, AI-generated content)
Week 2 – Core Concepts of Media Literacy
• Introduction to the five core concepts
• Guided practice with short media examples
• Vocabulary building for media analysis
Week 3 – Applying Core Concepts I: Authorship & Purpose
• Assigned article analysis
• Identifying creators, organizations, funding, and motivations
• In-class group analysis
Week 4 – Applying Core Concepts II: Format & Audience
• Assigned article analysis
• Headlines, images, tone, language level, emotional appeal
• Comparing how format changes meaning
Week 5 – Applying Core Concepts III: Content & Bias
• Assigned article analysis
• What is included, emphasized, or omitted?
• Perspective, framing, and bias
• Preparation for midterm test
Week 6 – Analyzing Visual Media
• Images, photographs, infographics, and video
• How visuals influence interpretation
• Visual analysis practice activity
Week 7 – Midterm Test
• Review of all five core concepts
• Written test: definitions, short analysis questions, applied examples
Week 8 – Final Project Introduction & Topic Selection (Discussion-Focused)
• Explanation of final project and expectations
• Choosing a recent topic (news or social issue)
• Finding four different media sources
• Evaluating source credibility
• Student question-building: Each student prepares 2–3 questions about topic choice, sources, or concerns
• Small-group discussion + instructor feedback
Week 9 – Final Project: Source Analysis & Peer Discussion
• Applying the five core concepts to each source
• Comparing similarities and differences
• Small-group discussion using student-generated questions
• Guided oral analysis practice
• Instructor feedback during discussions (limited in-class writing)
Week 10 – Instructor One-to-one Feedback
• Students continue independent work on final project with feedback from instructor
Week 11 – Final Project: Comparative Analysis (Discussion-Based)
• How and why reporting changes across sources
• Oral explanation of similarities and differences in small groups
• Peer discussion and questioning
• Instructor-led feedback on analysis depth and clarity
Week 12 – Final Project Synthesis & Minimal Writing Support
• Organizing analysis clearly (structured format, not an essay)
• Clarifying comparisons across sources
• Addressing common language issues
• Final student questions (2–3 prepared in advance)
• Individual support as needed
Week 13- Final Reports Due
• Final reports due
• In-class small group discussions about key points you learned from this project
Week 14 – Course Review
• Review of key concepts and skills
• Reflection on media literacy growth
• Course wrap-up

There is a strict NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED policy. Assignments are to be submitted on manaba no later than the beginning of class on the due date.

Please make sure to check on manaba each week before class to see what handouts you may need to print out, etc. Additionally, if you are absent check manaba to see what the homework is, etc. so that you come to the next class prepared.
