授業の概要
Students will read "Guns, Germs and Steel" by Jared Diamond. Guns, Germs and Steel is a history of humankind and how one society can dominate another. This is one of the most popular books on anthropology and history ever written. Once this class finishes, you will be able to say you read it in the original language.
Jared Diamond is an American scientist, historian and author. He was listed ninth on a poll of "Top 100 Public Intellectuals" by Prospect and Foreign Policy magazines.
David Baldwin has been teaching reading for 30 years. The books chosen for this class have all been best sellers and are among the list of must-read books of the last 100 years. Must-read books are popular because they are both interesting and informative. Guaranteed fun and interesting.
科目目的
Students and teacher will read together and discuss the ideas put forth in the book "Guns, Germs and Steel" by Jared Diamond.
Students will read little by little, in class, and review the material as well. Reviewing the reading is important in understanding and remembering. Each homework will simply be a review of the material.
Students will report on societies mentioned in the book. They will choose the topic, research and report on their findings at the end of the semester.
Two tests will be given to assess their understanding of the material. Each will be short and have questions that can be easily answered if they have read the chapters.
The focus is on reading and understanding. Only practical vocabulary and phrases will be taught chapter by chapter. All vocabulary words on the test appear in the book.
This class is always a lot of fun to the teacher and students as we get to know the different perspectives, values and backgrounds of everyone.
到達目標
By the end of this course students will be better readers of English including their pronunciation, chunking, inflection, and speed.
By the end of the course students will know how to define and speak about different schools of thought in history and anthropology.
Students will be able to say they read a book by a renowned American author.

Class 1: Introduction to each other. Opening assessment of students' ideas about anthropology. Read preface "Yali's Question" together and discuss. Homework read Chapter 1: Up to the Starting Line pp.33-52.
Class 2: Review homework. Read and discuss Chapter 2 A Natural Experiment of History.
Class 3: Review homework. Read and discuss Chapter 4: Farmer Power
Class 4: Review homework. Read and discuss Chapter 6 To Farm of not to Farm
Class 5: Review homework. Read and discuss Chapter 8 Apples or Indians
Class 6: Review homework. Catch up time. Explanation of midterm. Creation of midterm.
Class 7: Review homework. Midterm review of Chapters 1~9. Read and discuss Chapter 10 Spacious Skies and Tilted Axes.
Class 8: Review homework. Read and discuss Chapter 11 Lethal Gift of Livestock
Class 9: Review homework. Read and discuss Chapter 13 Necessity's Mother
Class 10: Review homework. Introduce final project. Read and discuss Chapter 15 Yali's People
Class 11: Review homework. Read and discuss Chapter 17 Speedboat to Polynesia
Class 12: Review homework. Read and discuss Chapter 19 How Africa Became Black
Class 13: Final reports on an original topic.
Class 14: Finish any reports, readings. Final summary of class. Watch documentary.

Students will finish and summarize the readings in Cornell notes fashion for homework.
Each student will discuss their homework in pairs in the following class.
For the final project, students will research a topic of their choice to teach to other students which includes, but not limited to, summarizing a consequence of society, using what was learned in class and applying it to a current news story, or taking what was learned from class and applying it to an historical event.

Taking part in reading, discussing and evaluating the topics in the book is the most important aspect of learning this material. Therefore, the largest weight will be placed on participating in class and completing the homework.
