授業の概要

In this class, we will read the book "Sapiens" by Yuval Noah Harari. It is a popular book about the history of humankind from the formation of societies to the scientific revolution.
Students will read a chapter a week, and complete Cornell notes for each chapter read for homework. The pace of class will depend on the ability of the students.
Each class will include discussing the topics in groups and as a whole class. Vocabulary and new expressions will all come from the source material.
One class will be devoted to student led instruction on a topic of their choice inspired by the text.

Students will be practicing reading in class and for homework. Students will read and discuss the text in class. Questions and exercises about the content will be included in each class. Students will learn summarizing techniques for homework as well as self study techniques. Vocabular, grammar, reading skills, pronunciation, intonation, speed, understanding and criticism will be practiced along with reading the text, not separate from.

到達目標

By the end of the course, students will have improved their reading speed, pronunciation, chunking skills and intonation.
Students will have read a book entirely in English, and will understand popular expressions from the text found in popular culture.
Students will gain understanding in the topics in the book as well as criticisms to the ideas expressed.
Students will finish class understanding that discussing, agreeing and disagreeing is a good way to enjoy reading while improving at the same time.

Class 2: Review homework in groups. Read ch.3 A Day in the Life of Adam and Eve.
Class 3: Review homework in groups. Read ch.5 History's Biggest Fraud.
Class 4: Review homework in groups. Read ch.7 Memory Overload.
Class 5: Review homework in groups. Read ch.9 The Arrow of History.
Class 6: Review homework in groups. Read ch.11 Imperial Visions.
Class 7: Review homework in groups. Midterm quiz on topics from the book. Read ch.12 The Law of Religion.
Class 8: Review homework in groups. Read ch.14 The Discovery of Ignorance.
Class 9: Review homework in groups. Read ch.16 The Capitalist Creed.
Class 10: Review homework in groups. Read ch.18 A Permanent Revolution.
Class 11: Review homework in groups. Read ch.20 The End of Homo Sapiens. Introduction of final project.
Class 12: Review homework in groups. Read a chapter from Deus Homo: A Brief History of Tomorrow.
Class 13: Review homework in groups. Final quiz on ch.12~Afterword. Preparation time for final projects and review game.
Class 14 Review homework in groups. Final projects presentations.
