授業の概要
Students are required to buy two textbooks, ”Academic Vocabulary in Use” and ”Writing Research Papers". In the first half of the lesson, students learn the kind of English that is used in academic contexts (university or college) regardless of which discipline they are specialising in. The vocabulary used in both written and spoken contexts, from journal articles to lectures to seminars, will be covered. Students must take a review quiz after each lesson.
The second half of the lesson will be on writing research papers, and students will study model writing, classmate's writing, and their own writing in depth. In particular, they focus on a clear, logical way to present ideas, originality of their own work, and crediting the works of others.
科目目的
Students will learn basic skills for language learning and academic activities, including various strategies, focusing especially on academic writing. Using a textbook for vocabulary building and essay writing, students will also learn about research skills; managing projects; accurate referencing and avoiding plagiarism; and writing a research paper.
到達目標
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
(a) write succinct sentences/paragraphs with appropriate academic vocabulary
(b) edit essays and research papers with accurate referencing
(c) manage their study and research projects in university contexts.
