授業の概要
In this course we will study English-language poetry, focusing on answering these questions:
- What is poetry? How is a poem different from other forms of writing or speaking?
- What is the history of English-language poetry? How has it developed from its beginnings to the 21st century?
- How is poetry relevant in our modern lives?
科目目的
Students will learn about different types of English-language poetry from the last 600 years. They will read a range of poems by both famous and little-known poets, and will learn how to understand such poetry on a variety of different levels. The course will thus increase their knowledge of English-language history and culture, while at the same time increasing their knowledge of spoken and written English.

By the end of the course, students will have learnt:
- the history of English-language poetry from the 1600s to the 21st century
- how to identity the technical features of English-language poetry (rhyme, rhythm, etc)
- how such technical features effect written and spoken English
- a range of poems, both famous and little-known, on a variety of topics
- how poetry can enrich everyday life

Week 11 — 20th century poetry
Week 12 — Free verse

Student are expected to spend approximately one hour per week reading assigned texts, revising notes from class, and working on other homework.
