授業の概要
We explore the history of the genocide in Africa (Rwanda) to learn about the role of international non-governmental bodies. Since this tragedy shows us how various countries and international agencies work, we will be considering the following organizations with this tragedy as a background: UN Peacekeeping, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent, Doctors Without Borders, UNICEF, International Court of Justice, Clinton Foundation, United Nations Development Program, and Catholic Relief Services. Further, we will consider “why” people “obey” authority, even to the point of destroying other human beings, with the studies of Stanley Milgram and Philip Zimbardo.

授業時間外の学修の内容(その他の内容等)
Most of class time will be reviewing your homework assignments, which are based on the documentary segments.
Every other class will have a discussion. This is for you to develop your opinion and perhaps to debate or at least to compare opinions with other students in your group. Every other week you will also have internet-assignment, for the necessary background information to help you develop an opinion. In listening to a variety of accents, particularly from people whose native language is not English, you will first learn to get the general meaning of spoken English, though you may not understand every word.
Most of your work for the class will be done outside of class, to prepare for the class, especially for the discussion-assignments. I will provide the websites for the video segments. Please watch the segment each week as many times as necessary as you follow the instructions in your homework pages for the Vocabulary, Getting Main Ideas, Listening For Details, Fill In Blanks, Final Details, Internet Research, and Things To Talk About. Plan to spend a half hour on the homework each week doing the homework.
授業時間外の学修に必要な時間数/週
