Course Outline: This course aims to improve each student’s basic speaking fluency and ability to communicate in English, through the discussion of a variety of general and academic topics.
You will read, watch videos, and listen to audios on social and global issues. You will explain, discuss the issues that you choose and research and present to your classmates.
In the class you will do the following every week:
(1) Making notes.
(2) Use English actively.
(3) Talk in pairs and small groups.
Each week a contemporary topic is announced for the following class. The students get experience researching and writing essays from which they will use to discuss the matters in small and large group scenarios. During the discussions, the students aid in improving the learning experience of their peers by asking questions to foster further discussion from what was prepared on paper. The groups are shifted throughout the class period to provide a wider audience. The focus of the class is to build skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Independent study is very important for this class. Much of this class will be in a "flipped-class" style. Therefore, it is important to develop discipline and efficient self-study habits in order to be prepared for the next lesson.

The teacher has experience teaching English in Japanese universities since 2002, a master's degree in TEFL, and heavily involved in speech presentation studies through high school and university. The teacher has been involved in many speech competitions and has been a judge at seven annual English speech competitions in Japan. The teacher is a published author of research papers and has experience editing research and dissertations as well as novel writing.
In class, there will be a focus on correct paragraph writing skills. Presentations will be given on materials from the class assignments.
