授業の概要
This is a skills-oriented course. The goal of this course is for you to master the SEVEN important skills that aid in successful presentations. You will learn these basic presentation skills as you give FOUR presentations this semester. You will evaluate your own presentations and your classmates’ presentations.
∙ to develop effective speaking skills (verbal and nonverbal--Skills 1& 2)
∙ to practice giving effective presentations
∙ to increase your confidence in presenting to group
∙ to organize information logically (Skill 3)
∙ to learn to make an outline (Skill 3)
∙ to learn to use PowerPoint (Skill 4)
∙ to learn basic citations (Skill 5)
∙ to involve audience in presentation (Skill 6)
∙ to practice giving constructive advice to classmates
∙ to work successfully in a group or with a partner
∙ to answer audience members’ questions effectively (Skill 7)
Presentation 1: Personal Story—A true story about an interesting experience from your life. You will draw from your own experience to stimulate the class with a personal story.
Presentation 2: For/Against Fast Food—Working with a partner (or in a small group), please give a presentation about why you are FOR or AGAINST FAST FOOD. Please decide at least three reasons why. You will explain the reasons why you are FOR or AGAISNT FAST FOOD, using PowerPoint. You will also make citations to support your ideas. And, you and your group will include TWO activities to involve your audience. Plus, you and your group will answer audience questions at the end of your presentation.
Presentation 3: For/Against Social-Media—You will describe why you and your group are FOR or AGAINST SOCIAL MEDIA. Please explain some of the reasons how social-media effects people socially, intellectually, and psychologically. After researching on the internet, you will use PowerPoint slides to present the information with your group. Please have a minimum of EIGHT PowerPoint slides.
Presentation 4: Social Issue in Japan – An explanation of a specific social problem in Japan based on secondary research. You will use the internet in class to do some of your research. Some past topics: 1) Homelessness; 2) Animal Cruelty; 3) Alcoholism; 4) Suicide; 5) Air Pollution; 6) Aging Population; 7) Raising Divorce Rate.
The Performance Focus courses teach presentation and visual literacy skills, aiming to teach students how to effectively communicate information through scripted presentations and visual material. Students will prepare and deliver presentations (either individually or in groups) on topics relevant to the field of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals are:

科目目的
This course focuses on output: how students communicate information in English.
This involves extensive practice in script writing and the use of voice, eye contact, gestures, and other body language. Students will also make use of audio-visual and computer resources, including presentation software such as Microsoft PowerPoint (or similar software). They may also learn how to create poster presentations (optional).
As with the companion course Reading Focus for SDGs, presentations in the course will be on themes relevant to SDGs.

By the end of the course, all students will have had extensive practice in script writing and giving presentations. They will have learnt how to plan and present scripted oral presentations, including PowerPoint-style slideshows. When giving their presentations, they will be able to effectively use techniques involving voice, eye contact, gestures, and body language.
